Who is he ?

Prof. Zhao Dongyuan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), academician of the Third World Academy of Science, is a professor (Cheung Kong and Hao-Qing Professorship) in the Department of Chemistry at Fudan University. His current research interests include mesoporous materials, microporous materials, zeolites and nanostructured materials, with an emphasis on the design, assembly, growth and control of the composition, morphology, functionality, structure, and application on catalysis, separation.

During his visit to GTIIT, Prof. Zhao delivered a lecture with the theme of "Oriented Assembly of Functional Mesoporous Materials on Interface". His presentation looked at the many different uses for mesoporous material and highlighted the  design of synthesis, assembly, structure and application of the mesoporous material. He also shared his research experience and academic writing tips with GTITI faculty and researchers.

We also got the chance to interview the professor:

Q: What's your first impression of this university?

A: The students here can speak very good English. This is amazing. It is not easy for undergraduate students to speak English so fluently. Besides this, their desire to acquire knowledge and their innovation are worth high commendation. As far as I know, some Chinese universities have tried to teach in English, but only English lecture notes were introduced eventually, and the teaching language was still Chinese. I believe that with excellent guidance, the students at GTIIT will make great achievements.

Q: As a giant in scientific research, could you give some advice on how to choose the research direction?

A: Just like you, undergraduate students are filled with possibilities. You need to explore as much as you can, and find your area of interest and dig deep into it. For me, you'd better not change your research direction, especially in the middle of your academic career. Life is too short to try everything.  Be sure to make yourself like it once you make a choice. Innovation is driven by interest. As a tutor, I will try my best to let students fall in love with their research field while they gradually deepen their understanding of it. Scientific research is different from doing experiments. Experiments can be easily found in the textbooks – in samples, processes, results…The most important thing about scientific research is to create new ideas. It is a challenge because there is no "standard answer" in research.

Q: As a visiting professor of GTIIT, what are your plans for scientific research and teaching?

A: Firstly, we will boost the scientific research and teaching cooperation between GTIIT and Fudan University to accelerate the internationalization of these two universities. Secondly, we will harness the local industry advantage to promote the research development and application of high-tech electronic devices through university-industry cooperation. As a new research-oriented university, GTIIT is faced with both opportunities and challenges. There are many young and excellent professors here and I am looking forward to working with them to improve scientific research. I will also provide suggestions in my field.

Journalist's note

During the brief chat with Academician Zhao, the word "internationalization" was frequently mentioned a lot. The large percentage of foreigners and the frequent use of English as an academic language alone cannot  represent the international level of a university. The real embodiment of internationalization lies in whether scientific research is conducted in accordance with international rules, as well as the international influence of the academic achievements obtained by the institution. We believe that with Prof. Zhao' joining, more achievements will be obtained at this brand-new university.
