Getting closer to masters

PostTime:8/3/2019

For many people, to meet face-to-face with masters in academia, including Nobel winners and Wolf laureates, is a distant dream. However, in the past week, 251 campers from 28 countries and regions had the valuable opportunity to communicate with world-class scientists in Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute Technology campus. Prof. Aaron Ciechanover's office hour was so popular that students had to move to a larger classroom.

You may want toknow more about these super scientists.

“What are you interested in”

"Long time no see," when Prof. Eliezer Rabinovici, professor emeritus of physics at the Racah Institute of Physics Hebrew University, greeted the class in a “Chinglish” sentence, campers burst out cheering. The most impressive thing for students was that masters were not so far to reach for during the Scientist Office Hour session. They were like the elders of the family, caring about your study, listening to your confusion, and helping you go further.

Prof. Zhang Shuguang communicated with each camper about his/her name, nationality, institution, grade, major and field of interest.

After lectures, Prof. Ciechanover even took selfies with campers.

“You can ask a few more questions”

“Everyone can ask a question”

During the Scientist Office Hours, questions like these could be heard frequently. The event planned to end at 6:30pm, however, due to campers' enthusiasm for learning, Prof. Sun Xianhe stayed for answering questions until 7:00pm.

Prof. Aaron Ciechanover invited campers to the front to communicate face to face. He even walked to the camper's seat, carefully reviewed the draft to make sure he fully understood the question.

What's more, Prof. Ren Yonghua, who just finished the 2-hour lecture, decided to continue answering questions instead of taking a rest in her busy schedule.

“You can find literatures in ITER for perfect purification of water.”

“Before settling down on Mars, I suggest to do a research on its real situation first.”

Scientists have different style in answering questions. When talked about "whether the speed of superconductor can surpass the speed of sound", Prof. Deng Zigang, replied passionately, "theoretically it is possible, but still has limitation in practice."

Prof. Ren Yonghua said she was surprised at camper's talent and was glad to see so many valuable questions.

“Be curious about everything and keep asking questions, even the most mundane things around you."

These world-class scientists are not only experts in their field, but also mentors of life. When some campers worrying about studying in an unknown university, scientists encouraged them to exploit the advantage of the institution. Some may feel confused about the future, and were then inspired by the experience of scientists themselves who managed to combine what had learnt with the society.

“You have brought so much surprise for me. I hope you can become excellent scientists in the future”

Professors speak highly of the campers. Prof. Wang Quan was impressed by the question raised by Sheu Fu Chun, a student from Taiwan. He encouraged the student to maintain the passion for her major and work hard.

Prof. Zhang Ming Rui pushed these talents to be open-minded and believe nothing is impossible, while Prof. Eliezer Rebinovici encouraged the fantastic imagination of campers and said, "Even if you don't succeed this time, you are a step away from it.
