To improve students' ability to deal with emergencies, Guangdong Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) recently invited the emergency medical team from the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College to conduct first aid training for the 2024 freshmen, offering a "compulsory course" on life safety.

At the training site, experienced doctors provided a systematic explanation of the steps for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), conveying practical skills through simulated demonstrations. The students present listened attentively, occasionally jotting down key points of operation amid frequent interactions.

In the practical session, the students experienced how to quickly assess a patient's condition in emergencies and perform effective chest compressions and artificial respiration. They also learned the operation of electric defibrillation through repeated practice.

CPR

After cardiac arrest, irreversible brain damage occurs within 4-6 minutes. The golden time for resuscitation is the four minutes following cardiac arrest. The doctors demonstrated the CPR process in detail to the students: assessing the environment, checking consciousness, calling for help, checking for pulse and breathing; positioning the body, performing chest compressions; opening the airway, providing artificial respiration; checking for breathing and pulse again after five cycles; waiting for rescue.

AED

GTIIT is one of the very first universities to have AED devices available on both its north and south campuses. At the training site, the doctors demonstrated how to connect the device and perform electric defibrillation in the event of cardiac arrest.

This event disseminated scientific first aid knowledge and concepts on campus, further strengthening the self-rescue and mutual-aid capabilities of GT students in the face of emergencies.
