The 12th and 13th Nan'ao Science Conferences, “Quantum Materials and Manipulation (2024)" and "Construction of Basic Science Research Center in Guangdong Province", were held on Nan'ao Island from July 21st to 25th, 2024.

Conference: Quantum Materials and Manipulation (2024)

Prof. Gong Xingao, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chancellor of Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT); Prof. Duan Wenhui, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Prof. Oren Cohen, Head of Physics Program of GTIIT and more than 30 experts and scholars from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, universities and research institutes from both inside and outside the province gathered together for the grand event.

The symposium, themed "light-matter interaction and non-equilibrium regulation", was divided into four specific topics: "Ultrafast Electron Spectroscopy", "Nonlinear Optical Response and Dynamic Control", " Light - Matter interactions on Low Dimensional and Interface" and "Non-equilibrium Theory". Participating scholars focused on cutting-edge issues in the field of quantum materials, conducting a series of forward-looking explorations on basic science and technological issues. They discussed further research directions, challenges, and opportunities, fostering a vibrant academic atmosphere.

At the opening session, Prof. Gong Xingao extended a warm welcome to the attenders. He shared the origins and purposes of Nan'ao Science Conference, as well as the educational philosophy and achievements of GTIIT. He introduced that as a young research university, GTIIT has fostered four cohorts of graduates, many of whom pursued further studies at world-renowned universities, fully demonstrating the substantial fruits of GTIIT’s talent training.

This forum also set up four panel discussions for the participants to discuss their research results, which provided an open platform for the scientists to advance their exploration, thus promoting the development of basic disciplines.

Conference: Construction of Basic Science Research Center in Guangdong Province

The 13th Nan'ao Science Conference with the topic of "Construction of Basic Science Research Center in Guangdong Province" was held concurrently. Prof. Xie Zuowei, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences, and Wu Shiwen, a member of the leading Party members’ group and Deputy Director of Guangdong Science and Technology Department, attended the meeting. During the conference, representatives of participating universities and research institutes shared their respective ideas for the construction of the research center.

Wu Shiwen pointed that democracy, science, and rigor are the purposes of the Nan'ao Science Conference. He hoped that experts and scholars could speak freely and provide insightful suggestions for the development of basic disciplines. He also hoped to establish a high-level academic exchange platform at home and abroad through the conference, gathering high-level talents in basic research and management science at home and abroad, to help build the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area into a global highland for basic research and original innovation.
