Prof. Uri Sivan, President of the Technion, welcomed everyone present at the event. “One thing that I believe in common to the Chinese and Jewish cultures is the importance of studying and learning. These are two ancient cultures in which learning and teaching are central morals. I believe this is also the very core of our collaboration and the reason why it is so successful.”

Chancellor Gong thanks President Sivan and all the people who originally proposed the initiative of GTIIT and contributed to it from the very beginning throughout the years. He continued expressing thanks to all contributors and professors who are a part of GTIIT, and even those who are not part but yet contribute to its success, to the heads of programs, management members, and employees who are working hard and who are involved in bringing to its development and accomplishments. “I think that this is really a great accretion for this university and that this is a great contribution to the friendship between China and Israel.”

Prof. David Gershoni, Vice Chancellor of GTIIT, concluded, “I do not describe GTIIT as a 'baby', but rather as a Schrodinger cat. It is my wish that this cat will grow and turn to be a mighty tiger!”

During the visit, Chancellor Gong gave a special seminar on “Understanding Materials from First-principles Calculations”. He used new solar energy materials as examples of how first-principles calculations can be used to comprehend their unique properties. Specifically, he discussed the defect properties of semiconductors and how illumination affects the properties of carriers in these materials.
