On April 27th, the 7th “Huaxin Trade Fair and GD-HK-MO Great Bay Area New Materials Industrial Cluster Fair” successfully ended in Guangzhou. Guangdong-Technion Technology & Entrepreneurship Center (GTEC) organized the GTIIT research teams to participate in the exhibition, including the Materials Under Extreme Condition Laboratory (MUEC) and Surface Engineering and Corrosion Laboratory, etc. and conducted a theme roadshow.
Under the guidance of the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Industry and Information Technology and Guangzhou Huangpu District Bureau of Industry and Information Technology, this event was hosted by Huaxin Park, the largest new material innovation park in South China. More than 200 organizations and institutions, including technological SMEs, well-known universities, scientific and technological innovation institutions, investment institutions, and financial institutions, gathered together to innovate, share, communicate and exchange. Thousands of audiences and more than 200 companies participated in this event, and the live stream also attracted a total of 1 million views.
Shen Yonghong, director of the SME Division in Guangzhou Bureau of Industry and Information Technology, pointed out at the event that the new materials industry is one of the strategic emerging industries that Guangdong Province and Guangzhou City will focus on cultivating. The development of the new materials industry is of great strategic significance for promoting technological innovation, breaking through technical difficulties, supporting industrial upgrading, and building a strong manufacturing province and country.
The GTIIT Materials Science and Engineering team participated in the exhibition. In 2020, GTIIT Materials Science and Engineering Program (MSE) was rated as a provincial first-class undergraduate major construction site. In 2021, the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Materials and Technologies for Energy Conversion (MATEC) led by MSE was selected into the list of the Platform Base and Science and Technology Infrastructure Construction Project of the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province and it has become the university’s first provincially recognized scientific research platform. MSE aims to build a materials science and engineering teaching and research center at home and abroad, cultivate world-class engineers and scientists, conduct cutting-edge scientific research, and become a frontier, research-intensive science and engineering academy.
During the roadshow, Associate Professor Elissaios Stavrou, director of MUEC Laboratory, and Associate Professor Aleksandra Baron-Wiechec, director of Surface Engineering and Corrosion Laboratory, introduced the research direction, innovative achievements and high-level scientific research projects of their labs respectively. MUEC Laboratory focuses on using pressure (and thermodynamic stimuli) to break the boundaries of traditional chemistry, physics and materials science, and to synthesize materials with new physical and chemical properties, which have practical application significance and help to clarify cutting-edge scientific issues in earth science, chemistry and other various fields.
Surface Engineering and Corrosion Laboratory focuses on metal surface functionalization, atomic layer deposition (ALD) thin film growth, advanced electrochemical characterization, etc. These will contribute to the dramatic change in the field of thin film technology, new energy materials, microelectronics, etc.
People from different industries at the event communicated enthusiastically with the GTIIT team, and appreciated the scientific research strength and development prospects of the university. They all expressed their willingness to explore future high-quality industry collaboration opportunities.
