World Tuberculosis Day

March 24, 2023 marks the 28th World Tuberculosis Day. The theme of this year is "You and I work together to end the tuberculosis epidemic".



On March 24, Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) invited specialists from Shantou Institute of Tuberculosis Control and Prevention to promote tuberculosis awareness and knowledge among all faculty and students.



Specialists and GTIIT Clinic staff distributed brochures for teachers and students, explaining the symptoms, transmission routes and prevention of tuberculosis, as well as answering their questions.



Q1: What is tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that seriously endangers human health caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis invading the human body. It is highly contagious and may occur in any part of the human body, among which the lungs are the most common.


Q2: What are the symptoms of tuberculosis?

Cough, sputum for more than 2 weeks or bloody sputum are the main suspicious symptoms of pulmonary tuberculosis, in addition to chest pain, chest tightness, dyspnoea, low-grade fever in the afternoon, night sweats, fatigue, anorexia, weight loss, etc.

If you suspect that you have tuberculosis, you should go to a designated tuberculosis hospital for treatment in time.


Q3: What are the routes of transmission of tuberculosis?

Source of infection: Etiologically positive pulmonary tuberculosis patients are the main source of infection of tuberculosis.

Droplet transmission: When a patient coughs, grunts or talks and laughs loudly, droplets containing tuberculosis bacteria are directly discharged from the respiratory tract, and may be infected after being inhaled by healthy people. This is the main way of tuberculosis transmission.


Q4: What are the hazards of tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease. If it is not treated in time, it will cause lung damage, affect work and life, and even be life-threatening in serious cases. It may also infect relatives and friends. If you get pulmonary tuberculosis and do not complete the regular treatment according to the course of treatment, it is very likely to transform into refractory drug-resistant tuberculosis.


Q5: How to prevent tuberculosis?

Control the source of infection: The main source of infection for tuberculosis is patients with secondary pulmonary tuberculosis. Early detection, early isolation, early treatment.

Cut off the route of infection: The sputum, daily necessities, and surrounding objects of patients with positive bacteria should be disinfected and properly treated. Indoors, ultraviolet rays can be used to sterilize. The tableware used by patients can be boiled. The bedding can be exposed to the sun in Liege. Take a bath and change clothes frequently.

Protecting vulnerable groups: Vaccination with BCG.

Improve anti-infection and self-protection capabilities, establish hygiene and living habits, do not smoke, do not drink alcohol, take baths frequently, ensure adequate sleep, have a balanced diet, reasonable nutrition, strengthen physical exercise, prevent colds, and use antibiotics rationally; reduce When in contact with tuberculosis patients, visiting patients should take preventive measures with the permission of the doctor or wearing a mask.


Q6: What should the student do if he/she has tuberculosis?

If a student is found to have tuberculosis, he/she should report to the clinic and cooperate with the school for screening and investigation.
