From April 17th to 18th, Prof. Lin Danming, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT), led a delegation to visit Nanchang Foreign Language School, Nanchang No. 2 Middle School, No. 3 Middle School of Nanchang and the Jiangxi University of Technology High School to learn about the schools’ history and students situation, and communicate with school leaders.
At Nanchang Foreign Language School, Prof. Lin gave a lecture titled“Science and Technology Learning Experience Breaking through the Upper Limit” for teachers and students, highlighting the unique talent training mode of GTIIT. As the China campus of Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, GTIIT has fully introduced the education resources of Technion. With its emphasis on foundation, problem-driven teaching, research orientation and innovation, it helps students discover their "seeds of innovation" and break through themselves.
Emphasis on foundation, that is, focusing on the courses such as mathematics, physics and chemistry to train students' scientific thinking, and on employing an all-English teaching model to guide students to think more systematically and rationally. The problem-driven classes are a highlight in the undergraduate teaching of GTIIT. In addition to imparting knowledge, our professors pay more attention to cultivating students' ability to think and ask questions independently. A good example is the article published by Prof. Jacob Katriel in the American Journal of Physics. It originated from the questions asked by undergraduates in the "Molecular Spectroscopy" course.
As a science and technology research university, GTIIT attaches great importance to developing the scientific research ability of undergraduates. For example, Chen Linhong from cohort 2017 was invited to participate in scientific research projects when he was a sophomore, published papers in SCI journals as the first author, and got PhD offers from top universities. Xu Xiaomeng from cohort 2017 published a paper as the first author during her working as a research assistant at GTIIT on one of the top three journals in the Chemical Engineering field, and went to the Technical University of Munich to continue her studies. These are the achievements of GTIIT students through scientific research to raise the upper limit. In addition, GTIIT also combines theoretical knowledge with industry and integrates innovation into practice by offering advanced courses such as Advanced Technologies in Food Engineering.
The high school students were amazed by the achievements of GTIIT students, and these also inspired their enthusiasm for exploring science. "What major should I choose if I enjoy mathematics and physics?" "How can I improve my upper limit in high school?" "How can high school students prepare for university courses?" With great interest in scientific research and STEM courses, they raised their hands and asked many questions. The atmosphere was very enthusiastic.
