Graduate Interview | Chen Linhong: It Takes 6 Years to Forge a Perfect Sword

PostTime:3/15/2023

This summer, the Class of 2023 will graduate from Guangdong Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT). They have big dreams and thirst for knowledge; they keep their eyes on the stars, but feet on the ground. The young "Aspirants" grow from GTIIT to a wider world. Let's follow the interview series of the graduates from the Class of 2023 to know their stories.

Among them, one young man stands out. He topped among the freshmen in 2017 and was the first GTIIT undergraduate student to publish an article in SCI journal as the first author. He broke the doubts with a dual degree, an excellent academic performance and PhD offer letters from top universities. He is Chen Linhong, a student of the Class of 2023 from Materials Science and Engineering Program.

Meet GTIIT, Live Fullest Life

In the summer of 2017, GTIIT welcomed its first cohort of undergraduate students, among whom Chen Linhong, who entered with the highest Gaokao score, attracted the attention of the school, the media and the society. "I didn't have many choices with my scores, but compared with traditional universities, I wanted to take advantage of this newly-built Sino-foreign cooperative school," Looking back on his choosing GTIIT, Chen Linhong said, "GTIIT's system is in accordance with the teaching methods and teaching quality of the Technion, while most of the teachers are directly dispatched from the Technion in Haifa, making GTIIT recognized by top universities and institutes in the world. This is why I chose GTIIT then."

Chen's Admitted in GTIIT in 2017

After entering GTIIT, Chen Linhong was amazed by the English teaching environment, the open academic atmosphere and the innovative teaching mode, which gave him a brand new experience of learning. "It was at that time that I realized that learning is a right. For a university student, study is no more for test scores. Reading, taking tests, and learning new knowledge are all things you do for yourself. It is our right, not our duty, to take courses," he shared.

With this attitude, Chen Linhong cherished every minute of learning in GTIIT. He studied like a sponge, absorbing knowledge from classes, articles and online open resources. "MSE program covers a wide range of courses: basic courses such as mathematics, physics, graphics and programming; professional courses about different subjects including semiconductors and ceramics; theoretical and operating experiments," he added, "as an MSE student, our schedule is full every year." While building a comprehensive knowledge system, Chen Linhong also seized every opportunity to discuss and communicate with GTIIT professors, and kept up with the scientific frontier and industry trends.

Chen with Friends

During the sophomore year, Chen was invited by the professor for his outstanding performance to participate in the scientific research project, and soon went to the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, Russia for a two-week research visit. He succeeded in publishing the research result in Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics as the first author, and became the first GTIIT undergraduate to publish a paper in SCI journals as the first author.

Passion for Learning, Way to PhD

Since 2020, GTIIT offers an opportunity for undergraduates with excellent academic performance and adequate time to study for a dual degree of the Technion, which provides students a channel to broaden their academic horizons and engage in interdisciplinary academic research. Without any hesitation, Chen takes Mathematics with Computer Science (MCS) as his additional program.

Chen felt that it became increasingly necessary for the graduates to study mathematics and have programming skills when seeking for further study or career. GTIIT indeed provides the opportunities in accordance with the industry demands, which enables students to broaden their horizons and engage in the cross-disciplinary research. Besides, personal research experience during the summer vacation also made him determine to enhance his skills and knowledge of coding and math.

Chen admitted that an additional program equals more than double of the effort and pressure. "Basically it means no vacation during my undergraduate study years, and may not be able to get the degrees in four years as usual," Chen felt worried at the very beginning, but soon calmed down by the "flexible academic system" in GTIIT. "GTIIT's system and open environment is similar to that in US and European universities. It is common to finish undergraduate studies in 5 or 6 years," Chen said. He started with the encouragement from the heads of the programs, and successfully won the dual degree with an astonishingly-high GPA of 94.

With the graduation coming, Chen made another surprising choice: to spend another year in GTIIT  as a research assistant. He would like to enrich his research experience and prepare for his dream. "I didn't feel anxious. While carrying out research, I never stopped preparing for the PhD program," Chen did spend a fulfilling gap year and his effort was awarded with admission letters from top universities including University of California, Berkeley (UCB) and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).

GTIIT cultivates innovative talents with cutting-edge science research, interdisciplinary integration, freedom to explore and diversified choices. Cohorts of GTIIT graduates grew here into talents with solid science foundation, questioning mind and ability to research and discover. An increasing number of graduates like Chen Linhong, are recognized and awarded with offers to PhD programs by the top universities.

Teachers Are My Wings to Fly

With a publication in SCI, a strong performance to earn a dual degree, and direct PhD admissions to the top universities, when Chen looks back to his growth at GTIIT, he feels keenly that he would not achieve such success without the instruction of professors.

According to Chen, GTIIT offers an open academic platform where he was able to meet eminent professors from all over the world, allowing him the chance to conduct research and teaching. He thus discovered his best path through trial and error.

In the classroom and beyond, Chen and his teachers are both mentors and friends. When he encountered a problem with the adjustment of a parameter in Russia and felt stressed, Dr. James enlightened him, "he told me to stay calm because the problems will not be solved by anxiety, and encouraged me to ask questions bravely. The edifice of science is built by standing on the shoulders of the pioneer and filling new blocks." The pearl of wisdom has inspired Chen to forge ahead and overcome challenges.

Chen was commended on his research spirit and excellent performance by supervisors. "I am honored to be the teacher of such an excellent dual degree student!" said prof. Eli Adjadeff, Head of MCS. Dr. Elissaios Stavrou, associate professor of MSE, also expresses his wishes to Chen, "It is really my pleasure to collaborate with Linhong. He belongs to a category of young scientists that becomes rare these days. He is aiming to deep understanding and is performing a very careful and diligent research, instead of cutting corners aiming to fast results. This is also accompanied with a respectful and professional conduct. I have no doubt that if he continues this way, he has a bright future and he will become a subject-matter expert soon. I wish him to continue this way and make his dreams come true!"

Chen Research in the Lab

With teachers' support and guidance, this young scientist stands out from the crowd – he received fully funded direct PhD offers from the University of California, Berkeley, and Carnegie Mellon University. The former is one of the leading public research universities in the world, in which the Engineering School is considered one of the top 3 prestigious engineering schools in the world. The latter is branded by its multidisciplinary research and has been home to 20 Nobel Laureates. Both highly recognized Chen's performance at GTIIT and awarded him with a full scholarship.

In the spring breeze on Daxue Road, Chen was always looking forward to the sunshine in California. Now, he has undergone an amazing metamorphosis from a dream chaser to an independent young scientist. He will hold on to his ideals in his further studies.
