Health, happiness and safety are always the main topics in people's lives. In order to improve students' understanding of emergency and critical illnesses, and to guide them to deal with accidental injuries, Guangdong Israel - Institute of Technology (GTIIT) invited the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College to conduct a first-aid training to freshmen.

At the event, the experts used stories and vivid language to teach more than 300 freshmen about cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the use of AEDs, Heimlich First Aid and hemostatic bandaging and other related first aid knowledge, and led the students to practice in groups.

In China, cardiac arrest accounts for 540,000 annual fatalities and has a mortality rate of over 90%. With such an alarming figure, it is imperative to learn how to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Theoretically, the success rate of CPR is closely related to the start time. The period between 1 minute to 4 minutes is called - the golden 4 minutes of life-saving. If the time is delayed to 8 minutes, the success rate drops to only 20%, and it’s most likely to cause "brain death". And once it reaches 10 minutes, there is no possibility of survival.

So what is the process of cardiac resuscitation? The complete CPR process includes judgment of the environment, determination of cardiac arrest (divided into checking the patient's consciousness, pulse and respiration), starting the EMS system, chest compression, opening the airway, manual ventilation, CPR and early defibrillation.

In addition, the experts also taught the knowledge about how to identify the bleeding blood vessel and how to bandage effectively. Accidents are everywhere, so learning how to prevent injuries, how to deal with them effectively and mastering the necessary first aid knowledge may prevent tragedies at critical moments.

"Can the defibrillator be used normally when it is taped upside down?" "Is it correct to think that it is just right to try CPR after learning it recently?" In the face of the experts’ questions, the students actively interacted and spoke enthusiastically. In the practical session, in addition to the training content, the students also raised questions about other medical knowledge, which the experts answered one by one. The atmosphere was active, and everyone was full of gains.

As one of the first universities with AED on campus, GTIIT has eight AEDs, five on the north campus and three on the south campus. In the north campus, they are located on the first floor of the Teaching Lab building, the first floor of the Administrative Building, the first of the Education Building, Dorm A in front of the Police Office and the first floor of Research Building. For the south campus, they can be found in the Building CW of the Faculty Apartment, behind the playground stand, and beside the elevator on the first floor of the Sports Center.
