Abstract
Ferroelectric and thermoelectric materials are two kinds of functional materials, which have been lying at the forefront of materials research. Ferroelectric ceramics have a variety of applications from piezoelectric energy conversion to dielectric energy storage, while thermoelectric materials are used for direct waste heat to electricity conversion and electronic cooling. This talk will first introduce ferroelectric (K, Na)NbO3 (KNN) as a promising lead-free piezoelectric system, focusing on some key strategies to improve the piezoelectric properties of KNN-based piezoelectric ceramics to the level of lead-based piezoelectric ceramics or even better. Considering the scientific links and emerging applications, I will also mention our recent work on similar niobate AgNbO3 as a promising lead-free antiferroelectric for dielectric energy storage application. Finally, I will briefly review the latest advances in the development of high-performance thermoelectric materials, with an emphasis on nanostructure engineering and thermoelectric enhancement mechanisms.
