On December 7, Dr. Alex Samusev from GTIIT’s Biotechnology and Food Engineering led a team of 40 students from this program to visit Shantou City Happy Food Co., LTD and Shantou Yuexing Enterprise Company.

The heads of the companies warmly welcome GTIIT’s teachers and students and introduced their profile, development, products, and exports, as well as the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points System (HACCP) in which food safety is addressed through the analysis and control.

The students were then led by Dr. Alex Samusev and the manager into the workshop to see the assembly line, take samples of the different processes using surface contact media and take them back to the GTIIT laboratory for experiment.

The Program of Biotechnology and Food Engineering (BFE) in GTIIT is one of the few international programs that combine engineering technology and life science, aiming to train excellent engineers and scientific talents in both biotechnology and food engineering. All academic staff from BFE are seconded by Technion or recruited worldwide according to the criteria of Technion. 

Dr. Alex Samusev introduced that the lab is an essential part of the course Food Microbiology. Bringing students to the assembling line and taking samples will help them understand the operation mode and food safety management of the company.

Founded in 2007, Shantou City Happy Food Co., LTD is a national high-tech enterprise recognized for its core business of research and development, design, manufacture and sales of pudding desserts, cheese and other ancillary products.

Shantou Yuexing Enterprise Company is a private-owned import and export value-added frozen seafood processor and agricultural and sideline products, which was established in 1987. It is the first company in Guangdong province to implement the HACCP plan of the US FDA and one of the first group of Chinese enterprises approved and registered to export seafood to European Union. 

The heads of the companies said that GTIIT has high-caliber teaching staff and advanced lab equipment. They hoped to establish good cooperation with GTIIT and developed a system for technological innovation in which synergy is created through joint efforts of the enterprise and university.
